Fume Hood Standards

  1. Standard Fume Hoods - For use of any substance with a TLV of 10 PPM or 30 mg/M3 and over. Also any flammable liquid or gas.

    Measurement Procedures as follows:

    1. 100 Linear Feet per Minute (LFPM) average face velocity
    2. No single measurement below 60 FPM. Average fume FPM should not go above 150 FPM
    3. Set sash at approximately 18 inches
    4. Average six separate measurements
    5. If below 100 average and/or 60 minimum - set sash at 12 inches and repeat D above
    6. Mark opening with completed sticker and arrow at either 18 or 12 inch level.
    7. Velometer reading required on each fume hood.


  2. High Hazard Fume Hoods - For use of any substance with a TLV of 0.1 PPM or 0.3 mg/M3 and over. Use a glove box or other type of total enclosure for more toxic substances.

  3. Inadequate Fume Hoods - Are those not able to achieve an average face velocity of 100 LFPM at a minimum 12 inch sash opening. All such hoods are subject to the following:

    1. Inadequate hoods may not be used for any experimental work.
    2. Inadequate hoods may however be used for storage of hazardous substances.
    3. All inadequate hoods shall be marked.
