Radioactive Waste
Call x2687 for waste pick up.
- Leave your name, type and location of waste.
- Let us know if you need a pick up immediately, or if it
can wait.
- You must have a waste log filled out before we can take
the waste.
1. SOLID - Separate by radionuclide.
- Plastic waste containers are provided for Solid Waste.
- Most of them are operated by foot-pedals - this reduces
the chance of contamination by hands.
- Make sure they are lined with a plastic bag before use.
- NEVER put liquids into the solid waste container. Please
try to remove as much “liquid from your vials, tubes and
tips before placing them in the waste container.
- Fill out the Waste Log for that radionuclide EVERY TIME
you put waste in the container.
2. LIQUID - Separating by radionuclide is optional.
Aqueous:
- Plastic 20 liter carboys are provided for aqueous radioactive
waste.
- Keep the cap screwed on the carboys when they are not
in use.
- Fill out the Waste Log EVERY TIME you put waste in the
container.
- Please do not over-fill the containers. Please have them
picked up when they are about 3/4 full.
- If any solid objects fall into the liquid waste, please
note that on the Waste Log.
3. ORGANIC
Liquid scintillation cocktail:
- Do not open the LSC vials. Place ALL vials un-opened into
the Waste Barrel in SLC161D.
- Fill out the Waste Log EVERY TIME you put waste in the
container.
- Please note the TYPE of LS cocktail you used, such as
"Ultima Gold," "Aque-Solv," etc.
Other organic solvents:
- If you generate any other type of organic radioactive
waste, please check with Sue for the appropriate waste disposal
method.
