Presence of Asbestos in Campus Buildings
January
2008
California's Asbestos Notification Law, California Health and Safety Code Sections 25915-25919.7, and the Federal OSHA Asbestos Construction Standard require that notification be given regarding whether asbestos containing material (ACM) is present in public buildings. All employees and contractors who work in campus buildings are notified annually. Below is a list of the locations of all identified asbestos containing material (ACM) known to be present on campus.
It is important to remember that the presence of asbestos in a building, undisturbed, does not present any health hazard. It is the inhalation a asbestos fibers that cause health problems. It is important for employees to follow proper work practices to minimize the potential for disturbing ACM. Avoid touching asbestos materials on ceilings, pipes or boilers. Do not drill holes, hang plants or other objects from ceilings made of ACM. If you find ACM that has been damaged, report it to Facilities Management Service Center at ext. 3494. Do not disturb damaged asbestos material or asbestos debris. Only persons authorized and properly trained are allowed to perform work which may disturb asbestos materials. This includes clean-up of an area where ACM has been disturbed or removed.
Asbestos conditions may vary, and where ACM was identified in campus building surveys, it was in generally good condition, enclosed, encapsulated or of a type not likely to release fibers unless disturbed. In general, campus buildings built after 1990 do not contain ACM. In older buildings, much abatement of floor tile, in the form of removal, has been accomplished due to on-going renovation projects in department offices and classrooms.
Any employee may review asbestos survey reports and results of bulk sampling or air monitoring conducted on campus. All asbestos-related data is available during normal business hours at the Environmental Health and Instructional Safety Office, T-1475. Employees with questions may also call EH&IS at x7233 or at x2517.
