Carcass Disposal Instructions

To dispose of animal carcasses, I need to give our waste processor as little "non-animal" stuff as possible. So, please make my life easier and follow these rules:

Place all carcasses and animal parts in plastic bags.

  • Use clear plastic bags with NO markings on them.
  • DO NOT USE bags with the Biohazard symbol on them.
  • I think zip-lock bags work well for most items…please let me know what size(s) you need and I will get them for you.
  • EH&IS will supply large clear plastic bags if you need them.
  • Consolidate animals into one bag when possible. Try to avoid 1 tiny animal per bag.

As soon as an animal is sacrificed,

  • CALL Ext. 2507 or 7233 as soon as possible for pick up.
  • If you save several animals to be picked up at once, store the carcasses in a freezer.
  • Let us know if it is radioactive or not.
  • If a carcass cannot be stored in a cold place and/or needs immediate pick-up, make sure EH&IS staff is notified of this situation right away.

REMEMBER, frozen animals are not bendable!!!

  • Don’t pack animals into a space that I can’t get them out of when they freeze into a solid block! (Freezer drawers and ice-filled compartments are the biggest problems.)

ANIMALS (and parts) ONLY

  • No gloves.
  • No paper towels.
  • No bench paper.
  • No syringes.
  • No aluminum foil.
  • Nothing else!

If you have any questions, please call the Biosafety Officer at X2507 or the main safety number at X7233.
